The second research department is committed to the research and development of innovation technologies from biomass resources into clean and efficient alternative-fuel. Taking the innovative technology development as the core, grasping the leading edge disciplines, focusing on the organic synthesis of basis applied research, process development, technical integration and project demonstration., they actively promote the development of biomass energy technologies and the industry, provide important knowledge and technical supports for the development and utilization of renewable energy and national energy security.

The department is currently engaged in such directions of research and development as biomass hydrogen energy, fuel molding, micro grease and bio-diesel, and so on, has built R & D platforms of thermal chemical and biological transformation-oriented and formed more complete-function laboratories, equipped with advanced experimental apparatus and equipments. They have undertaken the national 863, 973, the Natural Science Foundation, as well as a number of issues of Shandong Province and Shandong Academy of Sciences, has made a batch of advanced level technical achievements. There are currently 11 employees, of which a researcher, 1doctor. In the pilot-test base of Shandong Academy of Sciences there is hydrogen production test-bed, and there is bio-diesel laboratory and fuel cell laboratory.
